I have recentley installed XP Home edition upgrade, I
have had a few problems since, some i have sorted out, some
i still need sorting. The one i need help with most is a
boot up problem that has started since my upgrade,I dont
know if the upgrade from windows98 to Xp home edition is
the cause or not,or if it is just a coincidence.the
problem is, when i start up my computer, when it is
booting up,half way through boot up , it says: "back up
your hard disk, failure may be imminent,pressF1 to
continue,DEL to go to set up.I have been in touch with
microsoft who told me to boot up from disc and try to fix
using xp repair.this did no good.
I am not completley usless with computers but have not a
clue about programming and stuff.
If any one has the patients to help me with a step by
step guide through to solve my problem,it would be
appreciated.
If the problem is not fixable,or someone with myy limited
experience should not attempt, please let me know. Thank
You, Joe

This sounds like the warning a S.M.A.R.T. capable drive and system would
deliver shortly before the hard drive fails. This warning appears before
Windows even loads. There are very rare cases where S.M.A.R.T. in BIOS
misreads the S.M.A.R.T. report from the hard drive but it is usually quite
accurate.

If the drive is still under warranty, you will want to contact the
manufacturer's technical support. They will have you run some tests on the
drive. Diagnostic tools can be downloaded from their website for this
purpose.

Having a drive fail is not pleasant but at least S.M.A.R.T gives you a bit
of a warning and you have a chance to move important data off of the drive
before replacing it.

Thanks Sharon,

Hoped there would be a magic cure, never mind, Thank You

You're welcome. Wish I could have had better news for you. I've had the
SMART warning too and know what a sinking feeling that can be. Sorry.
