Attempted to upgrade from ME to XP Home. First attempt
just stopped at the very start. Rebooted the computer and
tried again. Several minutes into the installation I got a
blue screen with the message saying there was an error. It
tells me to check for viruses and to check any recently
installed drives. I have not installed any drives recently
and a virus check with Norton finds nothing. It said to
run CHKDSK /f. I shut the computer down and tried CHKDSK,
it tells me to use SCANDISK. But Scandisk never finishes
running. Now everytime I start the machine I get a black
screen like the screen you get when windows crashed. The
main option is "Exit XP setup" or one that continues. If
you select the continue one, it continues briefly until
you get the blue failure screen again. If you select exit
setup, the computer boots to ME but a lot of things aren't
working right - for example, system restore had been
disabled and when enabled there were not any restore
points; and if I burn a CD, it burns it (you can see where
the cd has been burned) but no file names show up in
Windows Explorer (if you put the disc in a different
computer, the file names don't show up either).

It goes through this exit setup routine everytime you
power up the computer.

How do I get ME back and get this XP setup thing off?

If I can get it back to normal where I can remove some
files I will probably have to reformat the drive and
reinstall ME or something, but I would like to recover
some data first.

Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

Bob,

Welcome to the world of headaches that XP has brought us!
In the marketing of XP, little was said about XP not being
backwards compatible. But upon my upgrading to XP
Professional, I can no longer use many of my drivers (e.g.
photo scanner, CD Writer, etc.). For some of them, I
cannot obtain a free upgrade and must purchase a new
package. Thus, the true price of XP is several times the
marked price in the store.

If I had known this earlier, I would NOT have upgraded to
XP!! I know I am not the only one frustrated by this. So
a big market for Linux may be just around the corner.

Steve
