I am assuming that thisis a driver issue, but want to get some insight on
how to go about fixing it. I upgraded a system from W98 to XP, and for the
most part it went smoothly. Yesterday, the user went to play a CD in her rom
drive and it was not recognized. We opened explorer and navigated to the CD
drive, saw the drive, and saw the tracks listed, but when we clicked on one
the message came back to insert the CD. Am I correct in assuming that this
is a driver issue in the upgrade, and where might I find a driver to correct
the problem. It was a built system and not sure of the make/model of CD ROM.

Any help is appreciated...

Hi

You can try updating the drivers for your CD drive from the manufacturer's web site. To find out the make of your CD drive type the following into Start>Run, click OK. On the screen that appears, click on the + next to 'DVD/CD-ROM drives' - the name of the manufacturer should be there:

%systemroot%\system32\devmgmt.msc

Did you try a different CD?
Since windows see's the drive and the contents, I don't
think it's a driver problem.

Tried three different music and two data CD's. Same problem in all of them..

Thanks Will....will let you know if it works..

You might try deleting the existing driver in the Device Manager, then
reboot and let XP install a generic driver for the device.

Open Device Manager, and browse to the CD Drive, and delete it, then reboot.
If it is an ATAPI CD, XP will recognise it and install the generic ATAPI
driver.
