XP Upgrade CD/Install New Hard Drive

My hard drive is full and I want to install a fresh version of XP onto my new hard drive. The problem is I only have the upgrade edition of XP Home and it says that my system will be checked to make sure I'm entitled to use the upgrade edition. I did have Me before on my old hard drive but I won't have that in at the same time as my new drive and Me came preinstalled with my computer they didn't provide me with a CD. What should I do? How does Setup check this, could I borrow a friends Me/98 CDROM to authenticate the upgrade? I don't know what to do :-(

Thanks for any replies.

You do not need to have the an OS installed, the setup program will prompt you for verification during installation. Here's an excerpt from the installation procedure:

---quote---
If your Windows XP CD-ROM is an upgrade, you are prompted to insert a CD-ROM of a previous operating system to check for upgrade compliance. Remove the Windows XP CD-ROM, and then insert the CD-ROM from your previous operating system into the CD-ROM drive. Valid qualifying media for upgrade compliance include:
Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional

When you receive a prompt for the Windows XP CD-ROM, remove your previous operating system CD-ROM, and then insert your Windows XP CD-ROM.
---end quote---

If you have misplaced, lost, or never received a Windows OS CD, borrow one from a friend for use during this part of the installation.

You use Drive Image or Ghost to copy your old drive completely onto your new
drive.

Thanks for your replies guys! Eric thats just what I needed to here, thank you. I will borrow a Windows Me CD of my friend and boot up with the XP CD in my CDROM drive. I originally thought about ghosting the drive but thats way too much hassle and I don't have any software either.

Thank you! :)

Greetings --

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using an
Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and
format partitions as part of the installation process.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. The Upgrade CD checks to
see if a qualifying OS is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks
you to insert the installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately,
an OEM "Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must
have a true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and
*.cab files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to perform a
clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case,
there's no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD,
because the installation routing "remembers" that you started from
within the qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but
you get the same results: a clean installation of WinXP.

Thanks Bruce, if I have any problems trying to get it to recognise the CD I will install the old OS off the CD and clean install over it.

You can either do that - which is strictly going around the license, or
you could use a program (I use BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com
($35 shareware - 30 day full functional trial)) to 'clone' the present
hard drive to the new one, which is what I would do.

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

With the new drive plugged in as slave/secondary, boot the floppy,
Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on Partition work.
Highlight your C:,Copy, then on left select the new drive (HD1) and
Paste.

You can then increase the size of the partition on the new drive; or
leave space there in order to make a second partition later, or a
mixture. I would not have the 'systems' partition too big.

Now click on 'View MBR' and in it highlight the entry for this new C
partition and click the 'Set Active' Click 'Write Standard MBR' and
Apply.
Close out, swap the disks to make the new one the one that boots, and
reboot into XP.
