I have WinME and want to upgrade to XP Pro. I have read
all the various MS support articles, and Gary Woodruff's
Upgrading to Windows XP. The articles mention to upgrade
the BIOS before the XP upgrade. I have run the MS XP
Upgrade Advisor and have some incompatible
hardware/software. These will be uninstalled before the XP
upgrade.

Before upgrading to XP I have been attempting to upgrade
the BIOS and while I have sucessfully downloaded the files
to a floppy the files will not install, instead I get the
error message: 'This BIOS cannot be flashed because of
installed memory managers.'

I have disconnected unnecessary peripherals such as the
scanner, cameras, mic., etc. Would uninstalling all the
accompanying software as well as other software such as
firewalls, AV, etc. that had not factory installed resolve
the problem? Is there something else that I should be
considering to resolve the issue?

I appreciate that my question may be outside the scope of
this forum but I would appreciate any thoughts and
comments.

Thank you

Yes, instructions were followed with precision and
downloaded to a floppy. The procedure was done at least 4
separate times. The download is sucessful. It is the
installation that is the problem. The problem seems
centered around 'installed memory managers'.

Hi,

Have you strictly follow the instructions for how to format the floppy disk?
Have you save the flash utility to the floppy disk and
then save the downloaded BIOS to that floppy?

If you cold boot the computer with the floppy in the drive,
with the BIOS set to boot from the floppy (this is different
from a normal XP setting) the floppy, which must be a
bootable floppy with the BIOS update also copied, then the
BIOS should update. There are no memory managers present in
the BIOS (If you have some strange memory setting or
security setting in your BIOS, check and turn it off).

BIOS flash diskettes have to contain just enough to boot the computer.. you
obviously have memory managers running at boot.. go back to the instructions
relating to making a boot diskette for the purpose of flashing BIOS.. you
might try this site.. www.wimbios.com ..

Try using the the "DrDOS 7.x Disk For BIOS Flashing Basic- No Drivers" you
can get from http://www.bootdisk.com.
