What does that mean? What updates? How do you know that updates are the
cause of your problem?

What do you mean by "system resources"? What numbers are you seeing and
where are you seeing them?

Thank you for your reply,

The updates I am referring to are the Windows Xp Home updates. I don't get
any error messages.I go to control panel> security center > microsoft updates
to switch the automatic updates off and my laptop is back to normal.

I also know that the Microsoft updates are the problem because I can see it
on my process explorer.

I am not a computer expert so what I am trying to say may come across
confusing, so apologies for this.

Perhaps what you should do is actually INSTALL the updates. Just guessing,
since you haven't provided much information, but downloading but failing to
install the updates could be part of the problem. Also, since you are not
installing the updates, most of which patch security vulnerabilities, you
could also have an infected system. And you haven't mentioned using any
protection against viruses and other malware. Why don't you post such
information, along with the lines from 'Process Explorer' that you feel
indicate that Windows updates are the problem. If you are "not a computer
expert so what I am trying to say may come across confusing", then the
'Process Explorer' report may be difficult to interpret.

Hi,

I have tried to provide more information on my problem but the only thing I
have come up with is a file svchost.exe1232. This file is shown in my process
explorer as being the file slowing my laptop down. When I switch microsoft
downloads on, this file starts using 98.46% of my processing power, which
crashes the laptop eventually. I run sp2 service pack, windows Xp home
edition.

However I am not sure if this file or process is to do with automatic
downloads, but seems to only occur when I switch automatic downloads on.

'svchost.exe' is a generic host process and part of the operating system.
Usually several 'svchost' processes are running. The '1232' is not part of
the name of the process, but the 'Process Identification Number' (a PID is
assigned to each process.) Left click on the instance of 'svchost.exe' to
display the '.dll's being hosted.

However, if an instance of 'svchost.exe' is NOT operating from the correct
location ( '\system32\' in the windows directory it is not legitimate, and
indicates malware at work.

And your virus and other malware protection is? Is it up to date? Make it
easy to help you. Include more information like the results of any scans
for malware.

sorry I forgot to add that. I have Kaskpersky anti-virus personal, but not
sure if this provides me with a firewall however I have the windows firewall
on. I am currently doing a scan now and I scan every week. I did have some
sort of virus a few months back but i destroyed it within the anti-virus
software which actually launched itself when I was infected.

All my anti-virus software is up to date and I get regular downloads, but I
did have a problem a few months back as well with the anti-virus software not
downloading properly but managed to fix that with the help of the forum.

Well, you either have to provide more information or get qualified technical
help from someone with access to your system. There is only so much that
can be done through a newsgroup.

This can turn into a never-ending series of requests for more information,
and likely none of us has the patience for that.

So, one last time, a request for information, information that was requested
in the previous response:
WHAT is the location of the 'offending' instance of svchost.exe?
WHAT are the '.dll's that are hosted by that instance of svchost.exe?

Also post in an anti-virus newsgroup and pursue the possibility of malware.
Try
microsoft.public.security.virus
alt.comp.anti-virus
alt.comp.virus .

Hi!

I have the same problem on 20 computers on my company. But i know exactly in
what part the slowing down occurs. Try to go to
http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

press custom or express. Check out svchost.exe SYSTEM it eats cpu during the
check. AFterwards its all cool.

It does not matter wheter you have installed all updates on the computer or
none. The slowing down occurs during computer scan.

Sombody knows why this occures?

hi, that is exactly what I have. I downloaded spy bot search and destroy and
it came up with to files that it can't delete. file name was
Hkey_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\mozilla\Desktop, which doesn't make much sense?,
c:\programfiles\opera.exe and SOFTWARE\ classes\HTTP\shell\open\command.

I found how to stop the cpu usage with svchost.exe by debugging the file in
process explorer but comes back when the laptop is restarted.

I have also been trying registry repairs, free ones but it's not working
either.

I just tried to follow that link you gave me and all of a sudden the cpu
usage with the svchost.exe started kicking in again. It really looks like I
have some sort of virus thats not allowing me to get microsoft updates.

My updates are slowing my laptop down evrey time I switch it on, does
anyone know how I can fix this problem. I don't get error messages, it
just uses all my system resources indeffinetly until my laptop crashes.

Can anyone please help?

Quick answer: turn off automatic updates.

Thats what I have been doing for the past month (turning off my updates but
that is only a short solution) and not a fix.
