My main problem is that I have a USB Memory Keyfob what I want to copy
software across too. However when I insert the Keyfob with XP already
booted it doesn't seem to connect. If however I reboot my machine
with the Keyfob connected everything works fine.

I have noticed that in my device manager there are 6 "Unknown Devices"
in the USB Section. These appear even if I have nothing connected to
any of the USB ports. I have tried deleting them (and the controllers
+ Root Hubs) and when I reboot they all reappear. I am completely
stumped, as I cannot seem to get rid of them, even with no hardware
connected.

If the USB Keyfob is connected on reboot there are only 5 Unknown
devices listed + the USB Removable Media Device. So I am thinking
that the two problems are connected. I think the "Unknown Devices"
are preventing the USB Port being made available.

The same thing happens with other USB devices, they will only get
detected at startup.

The even stranger thing is I only have 4 USB ports! Although I do
have 2 Firewire Ports as well, but I wouldn't have though these would
be listed under the USB section.

I have Windows XP SP1, and have applied all the updates listed in my
"Windows Update".

Any help appreciated

Many Thanks

John

John, what I would do is go to Start>Run type regedit. Navigate to
Hkey_Local_Mach\System\Current Cont Set\Enum.
Look for any USB folders and rt click and select export. Then save them
as reg files. After they have been successfully
saved delete them from the registry. Same with
Hkey_Local_Mach\System\Current Cont Set\Services\Usb folders. Reboot and
let WinXP reinstall USB. See what happens. Since you saved the folders
you can rt click and select merge and reinstall them if anything
squirrely happens.
