I have a Windows XP Pro which cannot find driver for standard USB mouse
(or anything else for that matter). I wanted to change my old mouse but
when I uplugged it and plugged new one in Windows starts "Found new
hardware" wizard but fails to find appropriate driver. The same thing
happend when I installed new DVD Writer...
I found one thread where someone suggested copying driver.cab from XP
installation CD to C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386 and unpacking to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers, but this did not help.

Any suggestions?

About 2/3 to the bottom is a section called "XP asks for drivers". These
instructions helped to solve your problem on my system, For some reason XP
delete this registry entry at its whim. I've come across several with this
problem, Sure beats doing a re-install.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

After some more research I traced problem down to Siemens Gigaset 54
USB Wireless Adapter and it's driver installation. They have really
stupid bug inside: installation appends it's path to DevicePath entry
in registry, each time leaving first character out!? So instead regular
"%SystemRoot%/Inf;c:\Prog...", my registry had "mRoot%/Inf;c:/Pro..."
(you can see from the number of letters missing that I tried
reinstalling driver more then once). This lead to Windows XP not
recognizing ANY drivers, which is another stupidity - why don't they
check if path they're trying to use really exists and give some warning
or something? Instead of doing such decent thing, guys from Microsoft
pretend everthing's OK, leaving you without any clue of what's going on
:-(
