XP Troubleshoot Automatic Updates DL

i accidentally downloaded an automatic windows update for XP Pro but did
not install. want to delete the dl'd data, but not positive where its at.
believe it
to be at the following address:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\16b2c96a0c41f4dfdb4d3cc228a
4f819 (file created on date in question, 6/8/07) and a 2nd file is at
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install

all i want to do is get rid of the downloaded data in question without
blowing
anything else up in the process...is it safe to delete all files and folders
in
these files only - its for XP SP2 which i already have. need the room on my
hd
and this is quite bulky. what about deleteing any dll or TWAIN files (in
these
folders, only)? Also, my Automatic Updates feature is stuck on "ready to
install your last download?" and is not open to any new notifications. How to
correct this? Obviously, i'm not exactly a seasoned pro - can anyone help
me, i have no one else to ask! thank you
 
The file contained in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install
usually contains the latest definition update for Windows Defender
or, the updated monthly Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
[Windows-KB890830-V1.30-delta.exe]

Please do this ... go to Start > Run type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter

RIGHT click My Computer either on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose
Properties
Click the Automatic Updates tab
Put a mark next to " Download updates for me, but let me choose when to
install " if that is not the option chosen already.
Click Apply, OK to close Automatic Updates

Restart the Automatic Updates service from
Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter

IF that option is the one you've already chosen, then when the yellow
icon appears on the System Tray click on it, UNcheck the box next to the
update you do not want installed, click OK, and then put a check mark in
the box for " Do not notify me about this update again", click OK.
That will hide the update.
