I reloaded the XP operating system last week. Since doing
so, my networked Windows 98 PC now has a dialog box
requesting a network password when I try to access the XP
PC. I have tried my XP account users' password
and "admin" without success. I am able to access all
shared folders on the Windows 98 PC from the XP PC.
Please advise if you can solve this problem. Thanks!

Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP to fully enable file sharing.
That's normally all that's necessary:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networksetupwiz.htm

If you've created a password for the Guest account on XP, type that
password at the prompt.

If you have XP Professional and have disabled simple file sharing,
create a user account on XP with the same user name and password that
you use to log into Windows 98.

Try this - \\computername\administrator (where
"computername" is the name of the computer on your network
that has the administrator as a user).

To Steve Winograd;

Thanks for your suggestion. I had already tried the
network set up wizard (several times in fact) without
success. I now suspect it may be an issue with my
router. I reloaded the my router (Linksys)software on my
XP PC and then on my 98 PC. I then got an error message
that said i didn't have permission to access the XP PC. I
rebooted and was back to the dialog box requesting a
network password. A coworker suggested removing, renaming
and readding the networked PC. Any othe suggestions would
be appreciated.

Regards,

Steve

Hello Steve,

How do you make your Win 98 talk to your Win XP. My 98 can
see and access the folder of the XP. But not vice versa.
My XP can see the 98 via Network Neighborhood, but get an
error when trying to access one of the shared folder in
the 98. Thanks

Hello Jacques,

I am having the oposite problem you are experiencing.
Have you tried running the Network Setup Wizard? It is in
the Network folder in the XP control panel. Good luck.

I don't think that router software should have any effect on accessing
one networked computer from another. It certainly isn't required,
because I never load the software from the installation CD when I
install a router.

If the prompt on Windows 98 is asking for the IPC$ password, it's a
user validation problem, and there's no correct reply to the prompt.

Go to a command prompt on XP and enter this line to make sure that the
Guest account is enabled for networked access:

net user guest /active:yes

If you've created a password for the Guest account on XP, type that
password at the prompt. The Guest account doesn't have a password
unless you've explicitly created one.

If that doesn't solve the problem, create a user account on XP with
the same user name and password that you use to log onto Windows 98.

Steve,

The router was not the problem. I just got it working
again. The request is for the IPC$ password. I tried
both of your suggestions without success. Any other
suggestions?

Thanks for your help!
