I heard that if the hard drive has ever been partitioned at all vista won't
install.

I also heard that checks other hard drives to see if looks like linux was
previously installed and removed, then send a note back to microsoft to
report you was an open source communist.

I mean your REALLY think Vista won't do an upgrade?
Really?

Joel:

Vista will install on previously partitioned hard drive.

I know because I am running Vista on a SATA hard drive that was partitioned
by Partition Magic 8 (partitioned when I was running XP)

I was being facetious.

A full retail version of 32 bit Vista upgrades all versions of 32bit XP.

I could not imagine Microsoft trying to sell a new consumer OS that did not
upgrade the previous consumer OS, it would be a nightmare.

Depending on the platform, you can do an upgrade from XP x86 to Vista x86.
Vista x64 requires a clean install.

I jumped in too quick :-/

According to the EULA, if you have XP installed, you have to re-purchase
Windows XP Upgradeable Edition ($399), and install it, in addition to the
Upgrade version of Vista, if you want to retain any of your old XP data and
configuration. You are also required to agree to publish a web site using
Vista Upgrade Announcement Tool, and you're not allowed to say anything
negative about the upgrade experience, only positive things. Read it, it's
right there in the EULA!! On page 335!!
