I am trying to network an XP pro machine to an ME system,
via a direct link cable (ethernet no hub involved). Whilst
the network runs fine for file sharing, the shared
internet connection refusues to work. The ME machine
appears to connect to the XP system, and dial up the
broadband connection, but the ME machine refuses to
display any web pages at all. I have been told that I need
a router, but I assumed that ICS was a software NAT
router. I used the XP network setup disk on the ME
machine, and I have even tried setting up from scratch
again, but nothing wants to work. I can see the machines
from each other, its just the internet that wont work. I
have BT Broadband, which is a PPPoE ADSL service, is this
a problem. I have tried the trouble shooters on the
practically networked website, but cant find anything
applicable to my problem.

Any help would be VERY grateful

Are you using a firewall? XP installs one by default, so turn it off if you
have another one running.
If you are using Zone Alarm - ICS isnt compatible with free version and you
have to configure the pro version to allow ics.

Yes, ICS is a software NAT router and can do what you want. A
hardware router would have some advantages, though:

1. It's easier to set up.
2. It's more reliable.
3. It wouldn't require leaving your XP Pro machine running whenever
the ME system wants Internet access.

There's a common problem with using ICS to share DSL connections that
use PPP Over Ethernet (PPPoE). Here are some possible fixes. Any one
of them should solve the problem:

1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 on the ICS host computer.

2. Find the right MTU setting on the client computers, as shown here:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107

and then make the setting manually on the client computers, or use
DrTCP to make it:

http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html

3. Download the free RASPPPoE program and install it on the host
computer. Use it instead of XP's PPPoE program. Details at these
sites:
