I am getting an error trying to connect a XP laptop to my
work network. When trying to join the domain, the wizard
gives an error that the domain controller cannot be
found. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Keith:

This is a regular encounter for me as a Network Admin.
There are a number of reasons for this:
1. You must specify the DNS server within your TCP
settings.

2. You must make sure that if your domain controller is
configured for TCP/IP over NETBEUI, that your laptop is
as well.

3. If so, you must type the domain name with the dns
suffix and not as a NETBIOS name: e.g. microsoft.com not
without the .com at the end.

If, in fact, your Domain Controller is using TCP/IP over
NetBEUI, your laptop should be configured for TCP/IP.
Here's how: right-click on Network Places, goto
properties and left-click, right-click on your network
connection (make sure it is enabled)and click on
properties, in the dialog, highlight Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) and click on the properties tab. To the bottom,
if there's no Preferred DNS server ip address specified,
you might want to put one in there, click the advanced
tab, click WINS tab, select the "Disable NetBios over
TCP/IP" radio button. Clear enable LMHOST LOOKUP checkbox
(note: this is only if your network is using TCP/IP by
default). We're not done yet. Click the DNS tab and type
the DNS suffix of your domain down to the bottom where
specified. Note: You must have a privilaged account to
join a domain-namely administrative. Also, if you are on
a Windows NT network, you must create your computer's
account on the controller first. Good luck!

Let me know how you made out.

I think that you mean NetBIOS over TCP/IP. There's no such thing as
TCP/IP over NETBEUI.

In addition to having the DNS server for your Active Directory domain in the
client config, you also need to make sure that there are no other DNS
servers configured on the client. The ONLY DNS servers the client should
point to are ones that host your AD domain.
