XP time on Classic Taskbar takes up too much space

I have (and like) Windows Classic style and Classic Start Menu on Windows
XP -- with one small exception:

I keep my taskbar vertical on the left-hand side of the screen so I can read
more of the task titles. On XP, the time and date take up three ADDITIONAL
rows on the taskbar, as opposed to being grouped with the tray icons as
under Windows 2000. For example, consider the "(i)"s below as system tray
icons:

Under W2k:

(i) (i) (i) hh:mm xM

Under XP:

(i) (i) (i)
hh:mm xM
Xxxday
mm/dd/yyyy

I would much prefer the behavior of the system tray time as it was under W2K
where only time displays and is grouped on the same line as the system tray
icons, and, if I need to see the date, I can get it as hover text by holding
my mouse over the time.

I can't find any setting for this. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone
know if there's a way to set this behavior under XP? Thanks.

You can alter the way the time and date are displayed in 'Regional and
Language Options' in the control panel. On the 'Regional Options' tab
choose the customize button. There is a tab for the time format in there.
All I have on my taskbar is the time. No date or AM or PM. I hover over
the time and it gives me the day and date.

Hope this helps.

CM;
If you drag the Taskbar smaller, it will only show:
00:00 xM

Taskbar - Hide Clock (Notification Area)

This setting allows you to remove the clock from the system tray on the
taskbar. Open your registry (Start/Run/Regedit) and find the key below. You may
need to create the key if it does not already exist.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'HideClock' and
edit the value according to the settings below.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
]

Value Name: HideClock
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = Show Clock, 1 = Hide Clock)

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the
change to take effect
