I have 1 xp sp2 laptop that thinks it is the master browser and is always
forcing elections with our DC. I did set the isdomainmaster = False in
reg, but with no change in results. Is there snything else I can do??

Quick and easy fix:
Stop and disable the computer browser service on all workstations (you can
do this easily via group policy). They don't need this service running.

You should still be using WINS if you're going to leave NetBT enabled at
all, though.

Somewhat off Topic:

On my Home LAN all the computers (5) are in the same File and Printer
sharing Workgroup. WINS is forced to enabled. I have no server and they
are not in a domain. Is there any reason why the Computer Browser Service
is running on all of them? Should it run on any of them? Does it make any
difference?

Hmmm? Do you mean NetBIOS over TCP/IP

Yes. If you don't have AD / WINS, you need this if you want to browse.

On each subnet, a single computer is "elected" to be the master browser
to maintain a list of other Windows Networked Enabled computers on that
same subnet and report the list to the WINS server periodically and to
local computers on demand. In order to be "elected", the Computer
Browser Service must be running on that computer. Therefore, you
really only need one active, powered-up Windows computer on a subnet to
be running the Computer Browser Service. In practice, all computers
run the service but only one is Elected to be active at a given time.

John
