XP System slowdown after any change

J

Jay Mann

Every time I make any change to my computer (ie: install update or new
program, change system settings and other similar things), my computer will
run extremely slow until I have rebooted 3 or 4 times. Until I do all of
these reboots my computer is so slow that it is pretty much unusable.

In addition, shutdown always takes a few minutes....... :(

I'm sorry that I upgraded, I had much faster performance under ME

System details:
AMD Athalon XP2000
Soyo Dragon Ultra
80 Gig 8mb buffer WD drive
Recent upgrade from ME to XP
GForce Ti4200 Video
Built in LAN on Cable modem
512mb PC2100
CD-RW
CD/DVD
300 Watt Power Supply

Any advice? I am at my wit's end

Do a System Cleanup. MyComputer>Rt click on Drive Icon>Properties>Disk
Cleanup>More Options>System Restore-
Cleanup. You could also try System Mechanic for a 30day free trial.
www.iolo.com Defrag your Drive.

I think your problem is related to doing an upgrade as opposed to a clean
install. I've yet to perform any upgrade and not have problems, so forget
about trying to solve this issue and format drive and reload the OS. XP will
make you quickly forget about ME. Do you currently have at least 2
partitions? One for the OS and one for your data? If not, set it up that way.

delete the contents of the prefetch folder and reboot.

normally located at c:\windows\prefetch

just the contents not the folder.

Thanks for the advice. I erased the prefach files and also used TweakUI
to help speed up loading. My system loads quite fast now and usually
works great. However, I still have this major slowdown issue after most
updates and installs untill I reboot the system 4 or more times.

I have been told that it is normal for XP to run a little slower after
changes are made to the system for restore and record keeping purposes.
However, I have much more than a minor slowdown. Anyone have any
experience with this issue?

Any help greatly appreciated since I cannot locate any information on
this problem in the databases.

Thanks,

Jay

That's pretty normal - basically the process of applying the patches
means that the OS is now sprayed all over the disk again (after prefetch
and background defrag had carefully optimised it all for fast loading).
As you discover, a few reboots (and some idle time on the machine) will
sort it out again.
