XP System Restore problem

Had a problem with some game software and ended up with a split screen. Have uninstalled the software, however the Windows XP logo that appears when booting up the computer is split on the left hand side of the screen. Also, the XP system restore feature won't work beyond the date when the software problem occured. I have tried to re-install the game software however it won't install as a dialog box keeps appearing stating that some components of the game are already on the hard drive

Settings in control panel - display are ok, and the games software doesn't appear in add - remove programs

Paul, without knowing or understanding more from your post, see if this

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
