Yesterday, I purchased a new XP computer for home use. I
set it up and got on the internet but it will only
connect at 48K (yes, I live in the stick and it will be a
year or more before high speed cometh my way). I
connected my laptop is also XP and it connects from the
same wire as 53.3K. Is there some way to find out why I
am connecting so slow? I went back and forth a few times
within 10 minutes and the laptop always connects at 53.3
and the desktop connects at 45K to 49.2K max.

Thanks for your help.

You probably have a software-based modem. Replace it
with a good hardware-based, dedicated modem that does not utilize
XP's system resources.

Hi,

What you see when you connect is just the initial connection speed. What
happens after that depends upon line conditions, server response, etc.. In
short, the initial connection speed figure is quite useless, what's
important is your send/receive rates after connection. On a dial-up, these
will swing widely between 9k and 54k during use, and there is nothing you
can or need to do to affect this.
