XP stuck in safe mode, keyboard use causes lock-up in safe mode

I searched and could not find a previous post with my exact issues.

At the behest of symantec, I turned off system restore and entered safe mode
to attempt to rid my system of a virus. Once in safe mode any use of my
keyboard locks up the computer. I cannot get out of safe mode because any
run prompts require using the keyboard. I have tried F8 during startup and
all the options send me right back to safe mode. How do I solve this w/o
using a keyboard?

Oh and the virus in question is hacktool.rootkit

Thanks for your time...

You could always use the On-Screen keyboard (OSK).. Click Start, All
Programs, Accessories, Accessibility, On-Screen keyboard.

But you should probably run these too:

Malwarebytes© Corporation
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

SuperAntispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Also enter the BIOS and make sure legacy USB support is enabled.
