Greetings!
On bootup my PC requests several services be given permission to access the
Internet. I am new to XP and have not been able to find definitive answers
in the KB or NGs.

Here are the services / apps.
Spooler Sub-System App
sear1 MFC App
SA Auto-Update App
Common Client CC App
SA Registration App
Messenger to act as server
Support.com Scheduler Command Dispatcher
XAUpdate

If I have missed KB articles, please point me to the right ones.
Explanations as to what these services / apps are and how they operate is
much appreciated. If another NG deals more with these than this one, please
point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

A lot of those sound like software trying to get on the net to register
and look for updates. Spooler and Common client are standard system
services that might be invoked from such a request.

Messenger is the Instant Messaging program - if you want to use it you
need to let it have access: if you then want to send anyone a file over
it (which is rather a good method, more efficient than email) then it
needs to be a server.
