XP startup problems

My XP Home SP1 pc has begun to freeze on the 'Windows is
starting screen' (or there abouts). After reading the
articles on the KB I found that I was missing a security
update from last year (my pc is only 4 months old) that
resolved a USB 2.0 & USB 1.1 issue that seemed to fit my
problem.
I've used this problem as an excuse to re-install windows
(getting rid of the pre-installed rubbish), and I've made
sure that all the critical and non-critical patches are
installed, including the microsoft hotfix which is
supposed to fix this issue (or at least one very
similar).
I'm still suffering from the same problem, though, but at
least I can log-in successfully every three or four
attempts now.
Am I missing something here, or do I need to wait for SP2?

Does Event Viewer offer any clues as to the cause?

Make a note of the precise text of any error message. You can always look at these in Event Viewer. Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID: and Source Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Post details of the Error Report and we can see if we are able to help.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately I'm not on my home pc at the moment, so I
can't check.

However I have been checking the event viewer occasionaly
and as far as I can recall there aren't any errors. It
seems that if it's going to log in it does so without any
problems.

Also, I've just remembered another strange thing that is
probably connected. After reading the articles on the KB
I turned off suspend in the power options. The default
screensaver kicked in at one point, and the system
crashed when I tried to return from it. I've turned off
the screensaver and now if I leave it (monitor off) for a
while, when I return it is back to the user login screen.
I can log back in from there, but a couple of times it
has been frozen at that point.

Any other ideas? At the moment I'm resisting the urge
to 'fix' it with a hammer.

Jase
you can try checking your hardware in device manager if you can find any exclamation mark on any device listed, if you find that i could be that the device may be having issues

1. right click on my computer and select properties
2.click on hardware
3. select device manager

let me know abt that if you any problems with any devices installed

It could be an error before Event Viewer kicks in! Can you pin down the point when it occurs to what is going on looking at the Information as distinct from Error Reports recorded in Event Viewer?

Another approach!

It could be a driver. Try checking for updated drivers?

Thanks, I'll try a clean boot later and report back.

I don't think there are any issues showing in device
manager, but I'll check. Thanks.
