I have three computers each using XP OS and the list of
startup files is different for each computer. Is there a
basic set of startup files that should be present on each
computer? What is the criteria for determining which
files should be included in the startup list?

It's hard to specifically answer that question because hardware, software
and driver requirements differ from one system to the next. I'm assuming
you are actually talking about which are the necessary processes. Try the
following website for an explanation of XP Process and what they do:

No. The computer and Windows need nothing. Obviously you want
your virus checker, firewall, etc., but beyond that, the choice
is yours.

What you should do is determine what each program is, what its
value is to you, and what the cost in performance is of its
running all the time. You can get more information about these
with google searches and by asking about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.

You did not mention if the machines are identical or at least have similar
hardware and run same programs. On the startup (msconfig/startup) you'll
have video/audio drivers, firewall, antivirus, other utilities set up to
load on windows startup. Hence, for different motherboards you might have
different video drivers (ati or nvidia) etc. Of course, you can disable all
startup files and still run XP in vga mode etc.
