When I turn my computer on, (after it's been off for
awhile, not on a reboot)I get an error message that
appears before the system has started XP..."invalid boot
diskette..insert boot diskette in A:"

The only way I can get past this screen is to hit
Control/Alt/Delete..Then the computer will boot into
windows XP..(and that seems to take a long 2-3 minutes).

Why is this happening? How can I get the computer to
smoothly boot right into XP?

Check the System BIOS for the boot sequence. Boot the system at the first
screen you should see information about how to enter setup with an
instruction to hit a specified key, do so. Once in, navigate to the boot
sequence, if the floppy drive is first in line, set the hard disk to first
in line and see if that resolves the issue.
