XP Startup difficulty

I have been having difficulty starting up my computer
lately, and have had to shut the power off and reboot as
many as 3-4 times before it will boot up properly. I get
to my desktop, but then it freezes with no error message
other than my firewall saying it was shut down incorrectly
after the first power down. I even tried letting it sit
for awhile after booting attempt before trying anything,
but as soon as I click on any icon, the timer comes on and
basically freezes up. I have a Selective Startup of:
Process SYSTEM.INI File, process WIN.INI File, Load System
Services, Load Startup Items [NVCpl, McUpdate, McAgent,
mcmnhdlr, mcvsshld, winpatrol, Freedom-my hardware
firewall], and Use Original BOOT.INI

Also, I have a number (67 to be exact) of deselected
startup items that I would love to delete, but don't know
how to.

One other issue, I occasionally get a NT ON-ACCESS Scanner
Service error message, which I'm not sure is related. I
have updated McAfee virus, Freedom Firewall, old Norton
still active, and regularly run Ad-aware and Spybot. My
kids have had Kazaa and LimeWire in the past.

To delete those startup registry items you can use
autorun.exe is similar to msconfig.exe but more useful as
far as startup registry items. You can selectively
uncheck items to discern what is giving you startup
problems.

You can download autoruns from :

http://doc.sch130.nsc.ru/www.sysinternals.com/files/autoru
ns.zip

I would remove any startup that wasn't store bought
software.

You'll have to unzip and copy a shortcut of autorun.exe
and drag it to your start/ all programs.

I would'nt worry about kazaa, your macafee virus will
prevent any virus from that.

Larry-Thanks for your reply. I had already unchecked the
60+ startup items, but still booting computer was a
problem as I stated earlier. 3-4 times of hard starting
(power on-power off) to get it to boot and don't know what
to do. It almost seems that one of these days it wont
boot at all; a scarry feeling. Any suggestions?

I'll look at that software download for eliminating the
pesty unchecked startups-which really just is
housecleaning.
