Steve;
Power off, open case and check and reseat all cables and cards.

Then try a Clean Installation this way.
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:

Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.

Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.

You have to have at least an 800mhz computer. I have
tried to install XP on a 700 mhz with no luck. Also, you
might try checking out your bios. It could be that those
old hard drives are still in the bios settings! Here...

1. Hold down the delete key when your computer starts.
2. Check all of your bios settings.
3. Make sure that AUTO drive detect is on.

Try those instructions first.

ok, i have done all that, but when i reboot it does not
ask me to press any key to reboot, the bios is set to cd
rom, it goes straight to loading in the start files, once
that is done it says setup is starting windows.both the
hdd and cd rom stop ! now just staring back at me.

Sounds like there are definite hardware problem with your system!! Did you
recently purchase this machine or build from scratch? If the former, take
it back! If it is the latter then do the old standby test...

Remove the MB completely and put on a static free surface. Re-install CPU
(remember AS or other heatsink contact material, heatsink, one stick of RAM
and video card. After connecting PS boot up - should complete post.

Next add HDD - make sure it is properly jumpered/detected. Then add
installation drive (CD/CDRW/DVD) making sure it is properly detected.

Make sure the CMOS setup is conservative - don't overclock or set demanding
RAM timings! Try installing XP Home. If successful, great! If not, try
different stick of RAM. If successful throw first stick of RAM in circular
reseptical and replace with new... if not successful try buying new RAM
stick(s).

If you are trying to install to RAID array or SATA drive try first
installing with regular IDE. If successful, great! You may have either
CMOS, connector or driver issues with RAID/SATA controller. If you can not
install to standard IDE at this point then (as you've allready replaced the
CPU) you are either looking at a bad PS or MB.

Hope this helps... use this process when OS will not install or installs but
has strange behaviors.

FWIW,
Len

Shhh! The 500 MHz Celeron PC on which I first tested both of the
WinXP Pro RC1 and RC2 releases and the subsequent retail version of
WinXP Home might hear you and decide to stop working.
