When running msconfig how do you determine which files are
required for XP to function normally.
Thanks
When XP is first installed the startup page for MSCONFIG is empty and the
Services page shows only Microsoft services.
As the system matures and new installs are made, items get added to at
least these two portions of MSCONFIG. If you add a keyboard and install its
extra software, a new startup item may appear that is needed for the extra
"hotkeys" to work. If you install third party burning software, it may load
a module at startup that gives the added convenience of dragging/dropping
files onto CDRWs on the fly. Antivirus will add autoprotect and so on.
Every setup is different. You'll need to determine on a one by one basis,
what to keep and what to disable. While very few extras are absolutely
necessary for Windows to run, a few startup items could be considered
necessary extras. Others fall into the "unnecessary fluff" category and can
be eliminated - OR - at the very least, choose wisely instead of allowing
all of them to run.
