Hi

My son lives 200 miles away so I'm no on hand to help out.

He is trying to install XP on to his laptop. He wants a fresh start so
he wants to format his hard diisk. He says he can't create a start up
disk in order to format the drive. He wants me to create a W98 start
up disk and send it to him.

Is there any way to format his laptop hard drive?

Many thanks

Colin

Hi,

You don't need a floppy disk start up disk to install Windows XP.

All you need to do is boot your computer off of the Windows XP CD.
You may have to go into your BIOS to tell your computer to boot off your
cdrom.

Once it starts booting off the cd, this will startup the Windows XP
installation process.
During the process, it'll ask you where you want to install your Windows and
options are given if you want to delete the partition and format the hard
drive.

Choose the format hard drive option and continue the setup and you'll have a
fresh brand new install of Windows XP.

Many thanks. Exactly what I suspected. I have forwarded your advice.

Best wishes

Colin

Tell your soon to boot from this Windows XP disc and
install Windows Xp as normal, Tell him to pay attention
to the installation, specificly when it asks what part of
the Harddrive he wants to install too. When he is at that
screen, tell him to delete his current partition on the
screen, then select the entire drive for his new Windows
Xp partition. Tell him to advance on after he has that
done, and the Windows XP disk will either (quick format)
or format his drive for him using the NTFS file system.
he does not need to boot into DOS to format his harddrive.
