Jerry, rt click on Start>select Properties>Start Menu-Customize>Advanced.
There you can reestablish run and search.

When I switch to the XP Start menu I get only the left panel. There is
no "run" or "search", etc. It also says I have too many items in the
start menu, etc. The classic start menu works fine. Is there a way to
fix this?

That doesn't seem to be the problem. Both "run" and "search" were
already selected.

Too many items in the start menu (XP Start Menu only)

Right click the Start button | Properties | Start Menu tab | Customize
button | General tab | Reduce the number for Number of programs on Start
menu

Number of programs on Start menu
[[Specifies the maximum number of programs to display in the most frequently
used programs list on the Start menu. You can increase or decrease the
number. ]]

Not sure what would cause this. Almost sounds like corruption of the .msstyles file. With the XP
style Start Menu selected, try toggling the 'Windows & Buttons:' setting on the 'Appearance' tab of
the Display Properties dialog. If you're using classic, try applying XP style, see if the
right-pane appears, then try toggling back. Vice-versa if you're already using XP style.

Nope, I reduced the number to "1" and I still get the message.

Well, since that's not working - try taking off one or two things that can
be added via Taskbar/Start Menu properties. For example, things like My
Pictures, My Videos - these are subfolders of My Documents so their
appearance is a bit redundant. Maybe Network Places which can be opened
from Control Panel or My Computer instead).

Nope -- I've tried all the suggestions and nothing works. I'll just
live with the classic stuff. Thanks to all who tried.
