XP SP3 upgrade to Ultimate SP1 crashing

Hi. Trying to upgrade to Vista. After the preliminaries (product
key, etc.), my machine crashes (spontaneous reboot) during the
compatibility scan, seemingly at the same spot every time (6 tries so
far), though I don't really have a way to measure it. Upgrade advisor
green lights my system and my hardware and identifies only one
application conflict, inCD, which I've uninstalled. Athlon 3000, 2.17
Ghz, 1.50 GB, 100 GB free. I'd sure appreciate some troubleshooting
help.

Never upgrade! Back up your critical data and do a clean install on a
formatted HD. It will save you countless headaches.

That would be my preference but I can't find a way to do it with the
upgrade disk. It tells me my product key doesn't allow a clean
install.
