XP SP3 seems to be causing conflict installing usb printer

I am trying to install a Canon LBP5050 USM printer on to a WinXp
machine. I have downloaded the latest drivers from Canon and when I
try to install , the install fails even though the printer is detected
correctly. When I try to update the driver either via Internet or by
pointing the install applet at the driver folder it says no software
matches the hardware.
It shows up correctly as CAPT driver and 'found Canon CAPT device but
when the machine tries to connect to the printer it says 'cannot
recognise the usb connection'.

When I spoke to my local Tech Support at the store where I bought the
printer, they said that likely as not it is a conflict with SP3.
I have confirmed that by installing the printer on another XP SP2 box
with no problem.
Now my question is how can I get the printer installed on the SP3 box?
Must I uninstall the service pack ? I have tried actually but even
though showing updates in the add/remove programs applet in the
control panel, SP3 does not show up as being able to be uninstalled .
WinVer confirms that SP3 is indeed installed.
Any suggestions anyone ?

I couldn't find any info installing the drivers but is this the file you
downloaded?

Exactly how were trying to install the drivers? Have you tried double
clicking on the file to see if it will execute? If it doesn't then you need to
extract the files from within the downloaded file and run the setup.exe that's
contained in it or point to the folder you extracted the files into if updating
via Device Manager.

yes this is the same file I downloaded.
It extracts to a dir into which there are folders containing the
driver files ( INF files ) and the setup.exe.
I have tried using the setup.exe installer which takes me thru the
install quite clearly and then when it tries to connect to the
printer, it fails with the cannot find the usb connection.
So then I try to manually 'point ' the intall to the driver folder and
I get the incorrect software for the hardware dialogue.
I have tried the angle where you select the 'have disk' in the install
procedure and when I try to direct it to the driver dir, I get the
same 'incorrect software' message.
This all works fine on the WinXP SP2 box as I say.
Something causing a conflict with SP3 is what is going on but what ??

Isn't that a network printer? If yes, I wonder if perhaps the install package
is the wrong one and it's looking for network drivers instead of USB, you did
mention USB in your post. I noticed that the readme.txt file in that package
had some notes on the lower half of the page and they all appear to mention
network installation. I also noticed when that there were to download files for
the printer, one had 5050n and the other was 5050, you may want to look into
that and the readme.txt file.

You may want to go into Safe Mode also and uninstall any/all of that printer
listed in Device Manager.
Then open either Explorer or MyComputer.
Expand to and delete the contents of:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username Folder\Local Settings\Temp
Click once in the right pane.
Press ctrl+a.
Press the Delete key.

C:\Windows\Temp
Click once in the right pane.
Press ctrl+a.
Press the Delete key.

C:\Windows\Prefetch
Click once in the right pane.
Press ctrl+a.
Press the Delete key.

Close out of Explorer/MyComputer back to your desktop and reboot.
Install the printer as recommended by Canon.

I doubt very seriously that SP3 has anything to do with your problem.
Almost all printers, AIO's cannot have the USB or LAN cables
connected, or the printer tuned on until the installation software
tells one to do so. The install instructions must be followed
precisely.

I have my canon printer connected to a LAN, however right in the
middle of the installation the software asked that I connect a USB
cable to complete the installation and then is says to disconnect the
USB cable after the install.
