All of my previous updates have been done for me, automatically,
but today I want to update my OS from this ISO disk.
The extraction wizard asks me to choose a location to extract the
data to.
I don't know what location to choose or how to install the updates
after they are extracted, so any help will be greatly appreciated.
Extract the update to wherever you like where you will find it. You
left out a great deal of information, but if this .iso just
includes several versions of SP3 (the 32-bit and 64-bit for
example), you're going to delete the installer after you apply the
update anyway. SP3 will be an executable.
For more help, explain exactly what you see in the package when you
double-click the .iso.
For the OP:
This file is a CD image file for users who wish to create an update CD for
Windows XP Service Pack 3, for example for offline installation by
administrators.
Obtain your specific Windows version (current) and share...
Start button --> RUN --> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.
The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version" will
give you the rest of the story. Post both in response to this message
verbatim. ;-)
For everyone:
SP3 or Windows XP does not have a 64-bit version. ;-)

Of you get the first - I suggest something simple - like ISO Recorder - to
create your CD with (assuming you have the proper hardware.) If you get the
latter - it is *just* the full file executable. Treat it as such and copy
it to the local workstation so it will more easily expand, etc.
ISO Recorder is a tool (power toy) for Windows XP, 2003 and now Windows
Vista, that allows (depending on the Windows version) to burn CD and DVD
images (DVD support is only available on Windows Vista), copy disks, make
images of the existing data CDs and DVDs and create ISO images from a
content of a disk folder.
