I didnt back my files up, and i havent had any problems with SP2 yet. I've tried most of my games, and most of my programs, and there ok. I havent heard of any problems with it conficting with other programs. Where did you hear that from?

The pop up blocker is pretty good, but i cant get the fire wall to stay on, it automatically turns itself off every time i restart/shut down. Maybe its because i already got a couple of firewalls already?

You can get the official SP2 disc free with PC Gamer.

Its true to say that microsoft have put more effort into service pack 2 than any of its other offerings, in terms of both effort and content. Although there were many minor tweaks you'll find some major changes too. microsoft is sitting back and waiting for the first owners of SP2 to give feedback before they make it big, so they are waiting untill SP2 hits a million computers and a few more software combinations. So all is good so far, and i can't wait untill i recieve SP2 on disk directly from www.microsoft.com. you will also be able to get you hands on this disk in next months PC Advisor magazine, and as reffy said you will be able to get it now in that magazine.

Dont worry my friend you are amongst 25% of the population that voted they wouldn't be too sure about service pack 2 from what they have heard in magazines and websites. And indeed roumors about applications to stop working in SP2 have spread like wildfire, so its up to you all to get it and report to microsoft whats up with it. Then they can fix it for you.

The aim of SP2 as head of microsoft marketing said "SP2 is a service pack, a big one. We wanted to improve our customers' sense of security, so we've majored that aspect in SP2" And the certainly have. Many of the security features in SP2 are there automatically but you may turn them ff if you wish, Internet Explorer has built in pop-up control and it will allow you to block or allow activeX controls at will.

The new windows firewall is easily configured via the security Centre in Control Panel. From here you can create exceptions for each connection on a network and there should be no problems with conflict with other firewalls.

I can reassure you, microsoft hasn't done anything to affect the integrity of your files.

harry.

I installed the SP2 but did not backup my files since it takes a lot of space on the disk (that too depending on the software and data on your disk), I had all my data and other imprtant downloaded software backed up on a DVD and also on the 40 GB mobile drive. You can make the decison based on your needs and requirement.

I have not come across anyone who has complined about any major problems.

Basic instructions ...
1. Make a system restore point
2. Install SP2 ... it will do its own back-up
3. Have a cuppa

When your system reboots you will be presented with the new "security center" ... if you do not have a software firewall, use XPs own (it is excelent), if you have a firewall and you know how to use it, fine, use it. The new security center does not usually find the fact you have an AV program running ... simply tell it you will mange that for yourself.

Now forget about it and get on with life ... it will inform you when it needs your imput.

Advanced user instructions ...

2. Install SP2 ... it will do its own back-up
3. Have a Whiskey

I have, to date, installed SP2 on about 60 systems, I've had no problems.

SP2 hoses Nero V6.0. Fact. You'll get a warning when you open Nero after installing SP2.

However, Nero supply an update to legitimate, paid for, versions of their software, so just download Nero's latest updates and all will be well :)

NERO Suite 1 OEM (Includes Nero Express 6)
Combining the recording capabilities of Nero with a new user-friendly wizard. For CD-RW, Combo and DVDRW drives. £2.52 inc VAT

;)

Mucks, that's the trade price list, I do believe I've mentioned this before, it's not available unless you're a VAT-registered company.

However, interestingly, the version available to the public is actually cheaper:confused:

The price for the full version (to the public) is around £20.00 cheaper than anywhere else, that's very good :)

Nope ... I paid special attention this time and quoted fron the "retail" site ... http://www.cclcomputers.biz/pricenav/retailframe.htm

It is even cheaper at the "trade counter" :p I suppose its one of the reasons I've not had any trouble with Nero & SP2, as I also insure I "upgrade" Nero to the latest version.

I was toying with the idea of buying 20 or so copies and offering them to PCReview members at cost + delivery

The dearer copy is the full boxed version of Nero ... at just over £2 for the CD what do you need?

Not sure. What's on the OEM version exactly? Do you get Vision Express, for instance?

And if that was the 'public' list you linked to, my apologies, couldda sworn it was the 'trade' price list, I must be going loopy...

I have only just joined this forum, and I am surprised by the lack of posts on SP2 problems. Perhaps you are all very lucky here. On other forums there is all h--- let loose , but here is all calm and peace.
I personally am in the position of having a Mesh 64 with which there is a known problem of total inability to boot after an instalation of SP2. I am given to understand, only today, that Microsoft has solved the problem and Mesh can now, perhaps, provide some help.

Perhaps now I may dare think about installing this monument to the skills and 76 billion (or is it more) dollars that Microsoft have wearing a hole in Bill's pocket.

I forgot. I agree wiht Gabriella that there should be a forum just for SP2 items so that they can be more easily found. After all, it is the burning topic of the moment and is likely to remain so for a long time to come. Unless, of course, I am missing something here.

I was sceptical about installing SP2 but i have and its worked perfectly. I think if you have a decent stable computer and make sure you keep it in good nick then it should be ok. Maybe the people on the other forums just dont know what they are doing! Send them here for some advice! hehe ;-)

Windows messenger skrews up my computer when playing a video, this only happened with SP2.

It will kill it, dead blue flickering screen etc...

If we do not have problems with SP2 on this board, we certainly have no intention to create them since everyone else is having problems. I updated my rig over a week ago and it been working flawlessly, I did not need to change anything at all. Same goes for my Laptop, IBM T41 nothing is bothering me on that as well.
