XP Sp2 was installed on a new Sata 316 gig HD with out creating a
partition first. Therefore no D: drive with the OS. How can I
correct this problem safely.

If XP was installed and is running, you do in fact have a partition. What
are you assuming this missing D drive is? Saying there is no D drive doesn't
tell us much as drive letters say nothing about the drive type, other than A
or B of course.

If you want to shrink your C drive and create a second partition on your hard
drive you will need to use a third party program. Norton Partition Magic,
Acronis Disk Director, and BootIT NG are three applications that will do the
job. I believe that trial versions of Disk Director and BootIT NG are available.

Norton PartitionMagic 8.0

Acronis Disk Director 10.0

BootIT Next Generation

Good luck

If Windows XP w/SP2 was installed successfully onto said hard disk drive -
there was partitioning.

A D:\ partition/drive is not necessary for *anything* in native Windows XP
nor most applications you might choose to install/run.

Why do you want this D:\?

You cannot create a D:\ natively in Windows XP (already running) given your
situation (which is - I assume - all of your only hard disk drive was
partitioned as C:\.) You can use third party applications to accomplish
this. You can format and install it the way you want (delete partition(s),
create partition(s), etc.) There you are. ;-)
