XP SP2 install

I have a PC with XP Sp3 installed, but it needs to be cleaned. I have a
commercial XP disk with SP2 but when it gets through copying, it says it
won't continue because the OS already has a later version and SP2 is not
needed.

If you are performing a repair install

create a new XP cd with sp3 slipstreamed

(plenty of help on Google showing you how to do so)
 
Why does your PC need to be cleaned? And what exactly does "cleaned"
mean in this context?
 
Fair enough. If your hard disk is "corrupted beyond repair" (that's what
my college teachers said about me) the only course of action is to erase
your hard disk and reinstall your software.

Seems like you have a Windows install disk - that will erase your hard
disk. You have to boot from the CD, not from the hard disk. Configure
your BIOS to boot from the CD drive /first/.

So is what you mean that you want to format and reinstall Windows,
rather than "clean" the disk"?

If so, note that the message that "the OS already has a later version"
is appearing because you are doing this incorrectly. When you do a
clean installation properly, it begins by formatting, and what is
already on the drive doesn't matter; it doesn't even matter whether
there is *anything* on the drive.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

But before you do any of this, I would still like to know what you
mean by "corrupted beyond repair," how you know that, and be sure that
it needs to be done.
 
Create a "Slipstreamed" version of XP that incorporates SP3
AutoStreamer, it's easy to use and for the most part self explanatory.
After you create the CD then do a "Clean Install", see last part
of my reply.

The slipstreamed CD you create will not include any specific drivers
for your motherboard, audio, video, network, etc. Those you will
need to download from your PC manufacture's or motherboard's
web site.

How to do a Clean Install of Windows XP
Start by changing the BIOS setting to Boot from CD drive first.
