Ian Bethell

XP Pro CLient on an sbs2003 network.

For some reason, without doing anything other than the normal everyday
computer use, I can now no longer log into one of my clients. No matter what
username I try and log on with, whether it be on a domain or the local
computer as administrator, it simply freezes after I press enter to log on.

The mouse still moves, and the orange/blue line scrolls.

I have left it for 3 hours and still remains frozen.

I have tried logging on with safe mode network support, but can't even log
on like that, and the only way is by standard safe mode using the local
computer administrator user/pass.

I have tried chkdsk, and de-fragged the hard drive.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Tap F8 as your machine is booting and select "last know good
configuration" from the menu. It's in that safe mode menu that you
mentioned.

Cheers Zadok, Tried that but still the same.

It dowsn't even get to the "Loading your personal settings" screen, it just
remains on the "Log on to Windows" screen with the username, password and
domain greyed out after i've entered them in and hit OK, or pressed return.
and the blue/orange thin line continues to scroll, although very slowly, and
never gets anywhere.

I remember with win98 the password list file sometimes got corrupted, could
the same thing be happening here? as it seems the computer can't even log on
or find the profiles or anything.

Cheers for all your help.

I've had similar issues, but not exactly the same ... just very slow at the
point of logging in. Suggestions:

1. Try disabling the windows update service. A fix for a bug in it has been
available for a while, so its unlikely but worth checking.

2. Check that the network settings are correct. Perhaps disable the network
card and see if you can login locally and if you can then take it from
there.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Thanks for your suggestions... I tried them all with no joy, and have simply
re-installed windows and all it's programs.

All seems ok for now...

Cheers anyway.

Ian.
