Ana

We have built an in-house application that uses Internet
Explorer 6. Through this application, users are able to
view various bill text, amendments, fiscal notes, etc.

After we installed SP2, every time a user tries to access
an amendment which is a .wpd, they get a message "Do you
want to open or save this file?" and they have to
respond "open" to view the document.

Is there a way to rid of this message box and have
the .wpd open without user intervention? I have tried
unchecking "Confirm open after download" for .wpd, and
this did not work. I tried lowering the Internet zone
security for all zones to "low", and still no luck.

Is there a registry hack? Any suggestions?

Hi Ana,

Thank you for posting here!

Generally speaking, Internet Explorer will open the file directly after you
uncheck the option "Always ask before opening this type of file" in File
Download dialog box and click Open button.

What I found is that the choice will not be saved if the file extension is
not associated to an application. So, I wonder if you can open the wpd file
by double clicking it in Windows Explorer. If no, please associate it with
your application in Open With dialog box.

Please let me know if the above suggestion does not work. I will make a
research to find out the registry key related to "Always ask before opening
this type of file".

Have a nice day!

Hello:

I checked in Windows Explorer and *.wpd files are
associated with an application (specifically WordPerfect).
If you could find a registry hack that would allow that
file type to open automatically, that would be great.

Hi

In the IE menu, select Tools\Internet Options and then the Security tab.

Select the relevant Web content zone (Local Intranet or Internet), and
then click "Custom Level...",

then look about two-thirds of the way down and you will see the option
to "Open files based on content, not file extension".

Change this setting and see if it helps.

Hello:

I tried that setting on both the Local Intranet and
Internet security settings. It was set to "enable". I
tried disabling, and re-enabling.

Unfortunately, this did not work.

thanks

Hi Ana,

Let us follow the below steps to locate the registry key:

1. Open Registry Editor
2. In the left panel, locate the below registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.WPD
3. In the right panel, write down the data of (Default) value. For example,
wpd_auto_file
4. In the left panel, locate the registry key associated to the above one.
For example,
HEKY_CLASSES_ROOT\wpd_auto_file
5. In the right panel, you may see a registry value named EditFlags. This
should be a Binary registry value. If you cannot see it, please create one.
Then, you should set the data to 00 00 01 00.

I hope that I have explained the steps clearly. Feel free to let us know if
there is anything unclear.

Have a nice day!

Hello:

I tried the solution below and it did not work. I am
still being prompted to either "Open" or "Save". In
addition, the registry key was set to the settings you
indicated in your postings.

Thanks

Make sure you use "Content-Disposition: inline; filename=...;" in your
application while serve the file to browser. "Content-Disposition:
attachment; filename=...;" makes browser always popup that dialog box.

Hope it works for you!

Michael Zhu.
