XP SP2 and USB devices

At our office, automatic updates are turned off on all the workstations via
the administrator account, however, one slipped by and downloaded and
installed SP 2. The workstation is a laptop connected to a Targus USB port
replicator and also has a USB thumb drive (Lexar Media 128 MB). Both devices
were working properly prior to the update and now are no longer recognized by
XP. The devices are USB 1.1 devices and are not even listed in the hardware
list where they were prior to the update. There are no drivers for either
device.

I am wanting to uninstall the service pack to return the system to its
original state, but not having installed SP 2 on other than test machines, I
am wondering if anyone has done an uninstall and lost any files, such as
Outlook PST or other crucial files? Also, has anyone run into this type of
problem before and does going back to a restore point fix the problem without
having to uninstall?

Thanks,

John

It would be prudent to backup your important files prior to
uninstalling SP2. Do not use System Restore as it does not
remove SP2 from a computer.

Carey,

Thanks for the quick respond. However, the article was sort of vague, at
best, as to the exact problem with USB devices other than those that use more
than 500 mico-amps that should be powered by an external source. The port
replicator is already on its own AC adapter and the thumb drive does not use
anywhere near 500 micro-amps.

I have been searhing the web for other related articles and have come up
empty handed. I can't beleive that Microsoft would release a product that
does not work with the current standard for peripheral devices. My question
about the restore point was geared more to attempting to restore the registry
rather than uninstalling SP 2.

Has anyone tried removing the USB devices from Device Manager and restarting
the computer to see if it will reset the USB devices?

Remove all USB devices connected to the laptop
and dismount the laptop from the Targus Port Replicator,
then uninstall the USB devices shown in Device
Manager. Reboot and XP will reinstall the USB drivers
automatically. Check the Targus web site and see
if they have a driver for your specific Targus Port
Replicator.
