I am pleased to announce that hotfixes to address the pop-up "string too
long" error messages - discussed in KB 842933
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842933) - are now available
through Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for:

. Windows XP Professional SP1
. Windows Server 2003

As I mentioned yesterday, we're working to make these available directly
through the Download Center and I'll post here when they are available.
Short term, though, you can obtain these through PSS.

Further, the Windows 2000 fix (which can be applied to SP3 or SP4 machines -
the KB article currently limits the fix to SP4, which is inaccurate) is
available from the Download Center at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...46-3AF7-4EAF-9CE6-E34EA2C74FAF&displaylang=en

We're in the process of updating KB 842933 to reflect these changes but I
wanted to give you a heads-up that these fixes are available now.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

A minor adjustment to my earlier message!!! While the Windows Server 2003
and Windows 2000 fixes are available now (through PSS and the Download
Center, respectively), we are still going through the process of making the
Windows XP Professional fix available through PSS. The current estimate is
for this to be available some time tomorrow and I'll be sure to post an
update here. Apologies for the delay...

Well, we got there in the end :-) The XP SP1 fix is now available. To recap,
this fix plus the Windows Server 2003 fix are available through PSS and the
Windows 2000 fix is available through the Download Center.

Thanks.

I can't get this install to work on a Windows 2003 server. It says the
"version of windows detected is not applicable for this fix" (paraphrased)
Should the link below allow Windows 2003 servers to get over this string
error as thats what the download page says

"
Update for Windows 2000 (KB842933)
Install this update if you receive the String is too long error when trying
to open a Group Policy object from a computer running Windows 2000, Windows
Server 2003, or Windows XP Service Pack 1.

Thanks

The update available at the Download Center is for Windows 2000
computers only. You will need to contact Microsoft (PSS) to
obtain the Windows 2003 Server update.

Any word on the 2003 patch being available for download. It's a pain to go
through PSS for non-critical hotfixes.

I'd second that, I'm getting fed up speaking to Indian call centers and
taking 10 - 15mins just to get a fix

And don't forget putting the charge on a credit card, waiting until they
realize that your problems is the hotfix, reversing the charge, and then the
follow up survey about how was your PSS experience!!!!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! I see the article has been updated to mention XP
SP1 and w2k3, BUT you can STILL ONLY download the fix for w2k SP3 for XP and
w2k3 you have to ring PSS, SORT IT OUT

Kerry

Kerry,

Thanks for the message. I hear ya! I most certainly understand why this is
frustrating but wanted to assure you that we are doing everything possible
to make these two final fixes available through the Download Center.

Thanks again for the feedback - rest assured I'll be very quick to post to
the newsgroups as soon as these fixes are available.
