hotfixs installed.these were installed by packard
bell.will these effect the installation of the sp ?.so
any tips/tricks or advice on how the sp should be
installed appreciated.
Download the Network Installation version of SP1a.
Save it somewhere you know is "safe" - like burn it to CD.
Also download the Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP and save it to
the same place/CD.
1. Service Pack 1a for Windows XP (Network Install):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp
(134 MB | 5.5 hours @ 56K | 11 minutes @ T1)
2. Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP:

Now - go to Packard Bell's site and search for FAQ on your PC - if there are
any known issues with the SP1 or SP1a.. Take note and do whatever it is they
suggest to prevent/remedy these issues. Generally, a simple search of their
support are for Windows XP SP1 will turn up anything, if it exists.
Scan your system for Viruses/Trojans/Spyware/Adware/Malware using the
following advice as a basis:
1. Scan for viruses using your UPDATED antivirus software. If you have no
antivirus software - get one NOW:

2. If you don't use AOL (or use AOL 9.x+) turn on your Internet Connection
Firewall:

3. Scan for Spy/Ad/Mal-ware using the following apps (at least Spybot and
AdAware):
LavaSoft AdAware

Spybot Search and Destroy

I also like "The Cleaner" and "SpywareBlaster" and "SpywareGuard".

4. Download and install/run Belarc Advisor:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Print the results. You may find a use for these someday. It tells you
what your hardware is and with that you can usually find updated drivers In
fact, you may want to go searching for updated hardware drivers now.
5. Before attempting to continue, go ahead and restart your computer. You
have cleaned it up and gotten basic information, now you can install SP1a -
but rebooting insures (better than not) that you don't have anything "extra"
running in the background. This is also a good time to reboot again (yeah -
two in a row) - the first reboot guarantees nothing has gone wrong..If it
comes back up with no problems you need to look into the first time, turn
off your system restore, reboot again, turn on system restore and create a
manual system restore point before continuing. This gives you possibly the
cleanest restore point you have ever had:

- How to create a manual restoration point:

6. Run the SP1a Network Install. Reboot when it is done installing.
7. Run the Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP install. Reboot when it
is done installing.
8. Go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for updates. Install
at least all of the critical updates.
The point of doing all of this? It is updating your software to be more
stable and secure.
Will there be a conflict with "Packard Bell Updates"? Doubtful, but that is
why you searched first. And if there is, Packard Bell(whomever) will likely
have a fix you install.
