XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Microsoft Update 822603

I know I should be asking this question in another forum but I run an Asus
P4C800-E Deluxe and have been experiencing BSOD/Freezes lately - major stop
errors and whilst they are generic and don't point to a problem with my USB
devices/Hubs etc, nevertheless the symptoms are very similar.

Microsoft has released an update at: -

It's a little over my head.

Could some very kind person please decipher what it's getting at and in
layman's terms please interpret matters please. I am unsure as to the
various suspend states but I do use a USB mouse and I experienced a major
crash when I tried to bring my system out of Hibernation recently. This
caused unrecoverable errors on two S-ATA WD Raptors which are currently
being replaced. If this was the cause, then I don't want a repeat.

Thanks for that stt, but I was rather hoping for something more specific
relating to the USB issue which it is supposed to sort out. I merely
mention my system crash in passing, as it relates, possibly, to this issue.

Someone who can inform me about the various "Suspend" or "sleep" modes and
how they can be woken up, in laymans terms would be very helpful indeed.
Theres talk about "suspend to Ram" and "S3 state" etal - what do they mean?

I have heard talk that the version 11 of Bios is more trouble than it's
worth and until version 12 is released, we are apparently advised to stick
with version 10 as I am doing at present. However I am fascinated about the
linkage to PS/2 and wake up matters as these seem familiar to the ones
mentioned by Microsoft viz a viz USB devices.

Is there anyone out there who can help translate please?

There are 3 suspend states-S1(power on suspend), S3(suspend to RAM), and
S4(suspend to disk or hibernate). The fix updates XP's USB drivers to
to more compatible with these states, apparently they were not sleeping
and waking correctly with certain hardware. Not much else to go on in
the documentation, but I'd say that if your issues are not clearly USB
related then this won't help.

Paul,

I have an Abit IT7 board with a RAID0 array on the onboard Highpoint 374
controller. I installed that recommended update and experienced conflicts
with the Highpoint controller causing the disks to be improperly enumerated
upon resume from suspend to RAM (S3 sleep state). Uninstalling that update
cleared up the problem. So, it looks like this update is more sinister and
general than I once thought. I have written Highpoint about the problem
about 2 weeks ago and didn't hear anything from them.
