i thought Service Pack 1 would fix this automatically?
any ideas?

I have the same issue. Although, if I boot with a Win98SE diskette
and format the drive with 1 primary partition, and then go back into
XP, it shows as 149gig(aka 160).

Strange, but it appears to be working ok so far. I should test it by
filling it over 137 gigs to be sure.

What program are you using to check the capacity of the hard drive?
If you have an existing 127G partition created before SP1 was applied,
applying SP1 to WinXP won't magically cause it to increase in size to
the full capacity of the drive. Disk Management (right click My
Computer > Manage > Disk Management) should show some unallocated
space on the drive.

You must have a BIOS that also recognizes this size drive. File corruption
can happen if you format beyond that point. SP1 is needed but if your BIOS
does not recognize formatted drives beyond 137 then your courting disaster.

How do I know if my BIOS supports 48-bit LBA (i.e. >137MB drive)?

Here's what I have;
BIOS Date: 12/18/01
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v6.0
OEM Sign-On: ACPI BIOS Revision 1002
Chipset: Intel 1A30 rev 4

Sorry, I should have noted that I have it connected to a Promise card which
does support this (sees it as 149 on bootup).
