I have a problem. XP Pro runs perfectly fine on my
machine. However, a few days ago I installed SP1 and all
recommended updates. Somewhere my USB ports stopped
working, no communication with printer and camera. Plug-
and-play simply didn't work.
I used restore points to go back and, hey, my printer and
camera and USB ports are working again. So clearly
something odd with one (or many) of the recent updates.
My computer is a Sony Vaio bought in March this year, so
made for XP.

Now, when I try to install SP1 again I get the following
message:
I know this is not much of help and it could be some of
the recommended upgrades that cause the problem, not SP1.

Does anyone else have the same problem or know how to get
SP1 installed as it is labelled "critical" update.

You need to talk to Dell.

Open Control Panel - System - General.

What does it say in the System (top) section about your Windows
version?

Ron, Thanks for an idea.
It says "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version
2002", but not "Service Pack 1" as seen on other
computers with SP1 installed.

That looks just fine. Have you checked the Sony web site for any XP
related updates for your specific model? There may be something there
that you need to install before or in conjunction with SP1.

Good luck

The SERVICE PACK-1 will not install properly or at all
if you have your security setting too high or your net
firewall setting high. Some virus protection software can
do the same thing. Turn those types of things off until
you have gotten the download. Then reboot for the updates
to take effect, and don't forget to turn you securities
back on. SP-1 deals with the very base of WINDOWS which,
is were worms and viruses get into your system.
