OK. HELP! I did something that I can't figure out how to undo!
About a week ago I was tinkering with my computer and I found somewhere
where I could change the quality of sounds that come out of my desk top
speakers system wide. Previously, the sounds were just normal - flat - if
you will - standard windows sounds, with no echo or special effects. In the
dialogue box were all kinds of options for sound qualities, such as from the
bottom of a well, back of the room, center of the room, and I don't even
remember what all. I clicked on a couple of them and listened to them, and
moved on. I didn't think I had saved any of the changes. I don't think the
changes took effect until I shut down and restarted, or at least I didn't
notice any difference in the sound qualities until my computer was
restarted. Now I have some kind of crazy sound effect that sounds like
everything is coming from the bottom of a well or with an echo, and I CAN'T
REMEMBER WHERE I FOUND THE DIALOGUE BOX!!!
It is about to drive me nuts. I was trying to listen to a video clip on the
internet, and the echo quality is so bad you can't hardly even understand
what the speaker was saying.

I have looked through all the options under Sounds and Audio Devices,
including all of the advanced options on every tab I can find, from the
control panel. But I really don't think that is where I stumbled across
that first dialogue box where all the crazy effects were located. At the
time I wasn't doing anything that I would have been in the control panel and
was not on a mission to change any of my sounds when I found it.

Can anyone tell me where I can find this dialogue box with all the crazy
sound effects so I can get rid of the echo chamber????

If nothing in Control Panel is applicable, double-click the speaker icon at
the right-bottom of your screen, and check all tabs and options there.

I already did that, too. The mysterious dialogue box does not appear from
the sound control windows, not even under properties.
I can't remember exactly what I was doing when I found that crazy dialogue
box. Ironically, the mission I was on during that session was to create a
Power Point presentation for a beginner user! I was doing screen shots of
some of the basic settings windows, like Display and a bunch of other stuff
for someone brand new to computers who didn't even know how to change their
wall paper. I was in and out of a LOT of stuff during that session, so I
don't even remember where I found it.

You can go to start button, click on, Help and Support Center. In the
dialog box type in Sound Effects. It will give you the instructions how
to fix your problem.

Yup. I already did that, too. There was a help section on sound effects,
and I followed the instructions, but there is no Sound Effects tab as
described in Help on the dialogue box it directed me to.

I think I am just going to surrender and try a system restore as a last
resort. I've been messing with this all night last night and all morning
this morning.

If you installed the sound card drivers, have you checked the mixer/software
applets that came with your sound card?

In that case, you probably used a special program that came with your sound
card, rather than a standard Windows feature. Look for an icon to do this in
the System Tray, or a program listed in Start | Programs. You also might
find information about it on your sound card manufacturer's web site.

Since System Restore restores only the operating system, depending on how
these changes are accomplished, it may not help you at all.

That was the problem!!! When you said that I remembered I had also taken
some time to clean up my Start menu programs and resort them into
alphabetical order. I remember that while doing that, I had seen a program
I didn't recognize, so opened it and it turned out to be the crazy sound
controls! I looked back through the progams from my start menu and found it
again, and FINALLY fixed the crazy echo! Thank you so much for your helpful
reminder.

(The doctor diagnosed me with a couple of diseases recently. CRS (can't
remember sh**) and O - L - D!!!)

It didn't help a thing. I saw your above suggestion after restore didn't
work and came back to the news group to see if there were any more
suggestions posted!

Thank you for your helpful reminder.
