XP slow

I recently upgraded from win 98 to winXP and am sorry. It
is so slow! I have 384mb ram, 400gighz processor, all
minimum requirements listed. Now, it takes 10-15 minutes
to do a search, 15-30 seconds to open a program, etc.
Anybody have ANY suggestions to make my machine faster?
 
Are you sure you have a 400 Ghz processor? The fastest I
am aware of is a 3 Ghz processor. If you have a 400 Mhz
processor then you are in trouble. The minimum I would use
is a P III 800 Mhz processor. Cheers

WinXP will run on that machine, although slowly, assuming all of
the components are WinXP-compatible. The CPU, while above Microsoft's
stated minimum requirement, is just barely adequate. More RAM might
help a little, as well, but that machine will never be a speed demon.

For improved performance, you'll want to turn off all of WinXP's
GUI "enhancements," though:

1) Right-click the Task Bar > Properties > Start Menu, ensure
"Classic Start menu" is selected.

2) Right-click an empty spot on the Desktop > Properties > Themes >
select "Windows Classic."

3) Right-click My Computer > Properties > Performance > Settings >
Visual Effects, ensure "Adjust for best performance" is selected.

It's because your system specs are poor , Stick with 98
untill you get a better processor and motherboard , I had
a amd k-7 533mhz with 256 pc-100 ram and xp ran very poor
so i understand what you are going through , Nothing much
you can do about it i don't think , Just stay with 98 it
will do the job untill you get a better system.

I assume you mean 400MHz, not 400GHz.

You're very near the minimum processor that Windows XP will run
on. You can't expect to get outstanding performance with such a
slow processor. That said, my wife runs XP on a 256MB 400MHz
machine; it's no speed demon, but it's adequate for her
relatively light needs.
