XP slow to open large shared folder

I have a small peer-to-peer network setup consisting of
the following PC's: 1-Win98, 1-WinME, 2-WinXP Pro, and 1-
Win2K Pro that acts as the file server. Cat5 wired
network, Netgear 108 hub, and separate firewall/router to
the broadband Internet access. I have a locally mapped a
drive on each PC to the shared directory on the Win2000
PC. For extenuating reasons, this directory has over
3,000 1Mb sized files. We're using an off-the-shelf
abstracting application called ACI that reads and writes
files to this directory.

My problem is that the XP PC's take ~15 seconds to open
and display the contents of this directory and also take
many seconds to open the selected file. However, Win98
and ME open and display the directory immediately. All
other LAN network, Internet activity performs as expected.

I've tried several registry tweaks suggested through
other postings without any improvement. Looking for any
suggestions.

Not sure this will help but...

I read somewhere in the knowledge base that changes made to a shared folder
are notified to all PC that have access to the share (or something like
that). eg change one byte and all five of your computers get sent a
message - apparently this can cause excess network traffic (no kidding).
Unfortunately I just can't remember where I read this. In my case it seemed
to cause delayed write failures on a client machine. The solution in my case
was to reduce the number of PC that had access to the share but that may not
make any sense to you.

Like I say it may not help but it might be worth looking in the database for
something similar.
