We run Quark, Office, InDesign, etc.
Would an upgrade to a dual processor be worth it to us in terms of speed?

Not likely because most software up to now have not been programmed to take
advantage of dual processors.

I know little about it myself, but have been reading about it lately. Try
looking these over; it does appear sms dual processors can increase speeds
some, 200% of course, being the maximum.

As I understand it, SMS doesn't require software to be written for multiple
processors: Somehow, it knows how to share the mathematical/video
display/?? assignments between the processors without the application
instructing it to do so. e.g. the OS takes care of it.

Check with the software vendors. I'm quite sure that InDesign can take
advantage of multi-processors. From the looks of your message it looks
like you are in graphics design type of work and most of the good
applications in that field are at the forefront of technology, many are
SMP capable. They will take advantage of true multi-processors as well
as the newer dual core processors.
