Wondered if anyone could possibly help me here. I have kindly installed a
new WIndows XP pro os on a friends pc. Now the problem he has is that every
time he dials up he then connects, and then into the session he is told that
the computer is shutting down and then turns off. Now I have also installed
new anti virus software and have done a vigorous scan and found nothing. Any
answers. Thank you

How's your friend connected to the Internet? DSL? ISDN? Does he have any connection monitoring consoles installed as well? I have encountered similar problems with a number of machines where a Murphy firewall would query an ISDN console, generate a message to user saying "allow - yes or no" and then shut down the system irrespective of your reply. The problem was solved indirectly by disabling the firewall every time you dialed up and re-launching it after connection was established. Not an elegant solution, bhut at least it kept the machines working...

Must bet the msblast worm. This is a new installed XP Pro right? Most
probably that's the reason. Happens to me everytime if I forget to apply the
patch first before I connect to the internet -- in my new XP Pro
installations.

Start > Run
shutdown -a

This will prevent the computer shutting down. Now you will have time to fix
it. Install the Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP (KB826939).

Good luck.

Sounds like when you/he set up his internet connection you did not turn on
the firewall. Extremely important. And also all Windows Updates. He's
undoubtedly gotten the Blaster worm. Norton, McAfee, and even Microsoft
have procedures on their web sites for cleaning it off. But make sure you
turn ON the connection firewall AND get all Windows Updates, and then keep
them up to date.
