XP shuts down when power cord is connected

Greetings Folks:
I have a compaq laptop with XP home edition.
When power cord is connected the system starts up reaches
the XP Home dition Screen and shuts down (consistently).

Also, If start the system with the battery, then it runs
fine. Then I connect the power cord it runs fine, until
after hours, it shuts down.

Can any one help
 
I wil try to remove the battery and use the power cord. f
the problem is gone then your battery is giving you
problem.
