XP shuts down in the middle of an application

Since I've installed XP it shuts downs in the middle of an
application, especially when connected to the internet.
The error log says that it is a system erro and an
application hang error. Any ideas on how to resolve these
problems. I have downloaded all the updates for XP as
well.
