I have recently installed XP Pro on an old machine (a
Cyrix 686 333mhz ) and when shutting down the computer no
longer shuts off instead it justs sits there with "it is
now safe to switch off your computer" on the screen.....
WHY? it always used to shut off when running 98 and ME.
Can anyone help? What do I need to do to get it to shut
off?

It is probably due to the fact that your old machine has APM (advanced power
management) whereas XP requires ACPI (advanced confirguration and power
interface). Usually if ACPI is available within your bios xp will install
the relevant drivers. If it isn't then you will get the 'it is now safe to
shut down your computer' It may be worth checking the bios to see if acpi is
available. You should find it in the bios configuration under power
management. Incidentally don't change any settings in the bios unless you
are sure what you are doing. If you chnage the wrong setting, then you pc
may not function correctly. If you still have your old pc's manual, check to
see if the bios details are in the manual before you start. The manual
should also tell you how to enter the bios.
